Almost 13,000 chemicals are used in cosmetics, and only about 10 percent have been evaluated for safety.  The average US woman uses 12 personal care products and/or cosmetics a day, containing 168 different chemicals, according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG). While most men use fewer products, they’re still exposed to about 85 such chemicals daily, while teens, who use an average of 17 personal care products a day, are exposed to even more.3

Before I began my training with lymphatic drainage massage therapy and essential oils, I didn’t understand that I was poisoning my body on a daily basis with my personal care products. My training and experience showed me that products I considered safe contained toxic ingredients. My personal care products were filled with petrochemicals, hormone disruptors, and synthetic chemical fragrances. All these toxins are damaging to your immune system and by default your body’s ability to maintain optimum health.

I began my quest searching for safe, nontoxic products that could be trusted. With the help of employees at my favorite stores around town, I looked for products that did not contain ingredients such as SLS, SLES, propylene glycol, aluminum, and triclosan. What I found was that virtually all over the counter personal care products contained some or all of these toxins. I was surprised that products labeled natural, organic or pure did not meet my stringent personal criteria.
