It’s tempting to reach for sugary, juice-flavored beverages during the hot summer months. However, these won’t keep you hydrated. So, how can you stay hydrated during the sweltering summer months? Here are some tips to help you maintain optimal hydration, even when the heat feels like a sauna!
Why Hydration Matters
As someone passionate about health and skincare, I understand hydration is essential for overall well-being. Proper hydration supports various bodily functions, including digestion, circulation, and temperature regulation. It also keeps your skin looking healthy and vibrant. But I’m no stranger to heat, and I know how challenging it can be to stay hydrated. Here are some tips to help you stay hydrated all summer long!
Eat Water-Rich Foods
According to WebMD, 20% of our daily water intake comes from the foods we eat. Consuming foods high in salt and sugar can make hydration more challenging for your body. Instead, opt for water-rich foods to help combat dehydration, dry skin, and fatigue. Some of my favorite hydrating foods include:
- Watermelon
- Blueberries
- Blackberries
- Cantaloupe
- Cucumber
- Leafy Greens
A helpful tip is to incorporate at least one of these fruits or veggies into your diet daily. Before you know it, your diet will be brimming with healthy, water-dense foods.
Infuse Your Water with Essential Oils
Did you know that you can consume certain essential oils? High-quality essential oils can enhance hydration during the summer months. Here are a few of my favorites:
- Lemon
- Orange
- Lime
- Peppermint
Add a couple of drops to your morning water to start your day right. You can also mix them into fruit smoothies, foods, and juices like aloe vera for an extra boost.
Sip on Herbal Teas
Decaffeinated herbal teas are an excellent addition to your hydration routine. I love sipping chamomile tea in the evenings to wind down, giving me an additional 8 ounces of water beyond the standard eight glasses daily. If you don’t mind a bit of caffeine, green tea is a fantastic detox tea that can jumpstart your metabolism, adding another 8 ounces to your daily intake.
Detox and Massage for Better Hydration
Toxins can hinder your body’s ability to hydrate your cells. Massages are a great way to eliminate built-up toxins, but they can also dehydrate you if you don’t flush your system with water. I recommend drinking an extra two eight-ounce glasses of water after a massage.
Don’t skip therapeutic massages, like lymphatic massages, during the summer. They help your body stay healthy, especially if you have chronic illnesses. The inflammatory response in the body can overburden the lymphatic system.
Additional Tips for Staying Hydrated
- Carry a Water Bottle: Always have a reusable water bottle to ensure you can drink water throughout the day.
- Set Reminders: Use your phone or a hydration app to remind you to drink water regularly.
- Avoid Excessive Alcohol: Alcohol can dehydrate your body, so try to limit your intake and drink plenty of water when you do indulge.
- Wear Lightweight Clothing: Dress in light, breathable fabrics to help your body stay cool and reduce water loss through sweat.
- Take Breaks in the Shade: When spending time outdoors, take regular breaks in the shade to cool down and drink water.
